United Win Premier League U21 Title

by David on May 21, 2013

A great illustration about how bright the future is at Old Trafford is the news that United’s U21s beat Spurs 3-2 last night to claim the U21 trophy.

Two defensive mistakes enabled Alex Pritchard and Jonathan Obika to put Tottenahm Hotspur two goals ahead in the first half, but United came roaring back through Marnick Vermijl and two Larnell Cole strikes to clinch a dramatic win at Old Trafford.

“I’m pleased,” said U21 manager manager Warren Joyce. “We were disappointed at half-time with the manner in which we gave the goals away. They were basic individual errors. We know from past experience this season what a good footballing side Tottenham are.

FergieFarewellSir Alex Ferguson was denied a winning send off into retirement as West Brom roared back from three goals down to snatch a 5-5 draw in a quite staggering 10-goal thriller at The Hawthorns.

Only once in Premier League history has more goals been scored in a game. And never have both sides found the net five times.

Maybe it was destiny that after so many milestones, Ferguson’s career should end in a manner that is unlikely to be forgotten either.

Not that the Scot looked hugely impressed as he chomped on his chewing gum, knowing his side could easily have lost when Markus Rosenburg spurned a late chance.

Rio Ferdinand has announced his retirement from international football.

Ferdinand was left out of the England squad for last summer’s European Championship and has not appeared for his country since 2011.

He was recalled by Roy Hodgson in March for the World Cup qualifiers with San Marino and Montenegro but controversially withdrew, citing fitness concerns.

Now he has decided to end his England career, having won 81 caps after making his Three Lions debut as a 19-year-old in 1997.

“After a great deal of thought, I have decided the time is right for me to retire from international football,” said Ferdinand.

Rio says he wants to stay at United

by David on May 13, 2013

RioFerdinandRio Ferdinand has dropped the clearest hint yet he intends to sign another contract at Manchester United.

The 34-year-old collected his sixth Premier League winners’ medal Sunday and marked the occasion by slamming home the decisive goal in the 2-1 win over Swansea. It was the first time he had found the net in over five years yet it was accompanied by continuing doubts over his future.

With his contract about to expire, there have been suggestions Ferdinand may take up a lucrative offer from abroad. Outgoing United manager Sir Alex Ferguson has insisted that will not happen, and Ferdinand has said as much now too.

FergieFarewellManchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson and veteran midfielder Paul Scholes were both given the perfect send-off from Old Trafford thanks to Rio Ferdinand’s late winner against Swansea City.

Javier Hernández gave the champions the lead six minutes before the break and although Michu scored his 18th league goal of the season to equalise, Sir Alex was not to be denied victory in his final game as United manager at Old Trafford. Rio Ferdinand’s first goal in five years with three minutes remaining secured victory for the champions.

Fergie confirms Rooney wants out

by David on May 13, 2013

rooney-goalSir Alex Ferguson has confirmed Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney has asked for a transfer.

The English international was left out the 2-1 win over Swansea City at Old Trafford, because Ferguson said the striker “was not keen to play because he has asked for a transfer”. The 27-year-old previously asked to leave the club before signing a five-year deal in 2010.

Rooney has often had to play second fiddle to Robin van Persie this season and has not scored for the club since the middle of March.

SAF: I decided to retire last Christmas

by David on May 13, 2013

FergieWithTrophyAlex Ferguson has revealed that loyalty to his wife, Cathy, was the key factor in his decision to retire from football management at the end of the current season.

The 71-year-old Scot enjoyed an emotion-charged farewell in Manchester United’s 2-1 victory over Swansea City at Old Trafford on Sunday, his last home game after more than 26 years in charge of the new English champions.

The fixture came just four days after Ferguson’s announcement that he is to retire stunned the football world and, after the celebrations that followed the victory, he took time to explain the reasons behind his decision for the first time.

Manchester United skipper Nemanja Vidic can’t wait to start working with new boss David Moyes.

“I’m looking forward to working with David and I believe I will have the same success I had with Sir Alex,” Vidic told www.manutd.com.

“David and Sir Alex share some similarities – they are very passionate, they are both winners and you can see the way they approach the games and how they run things.”

It has been suggested Moyes will work his new charges hard in training, but that merely ties in with the regime that is about to reach its end.

Rio Welcome Moyes

by David on May 10, 2013

United defender Rio Ferdinand says the whole squad is “delighted” that David Moyes has been chosen as the successor to Sir Alex Ferguson.

Moyes will take over from Ferguson on July 1 on a six-year contract and Rio insists he will get nothing but support from the players.

“We are all delighted,” he told MUTV. “It was important the club made a decision quickly and it all got sorted out. I am sure the manager thought long and hard about his own decision but the club have acted swiftly and it’s great to see the new manager coming in.
