Magnificent Scholes Sends United 8 Points Clear

With Paul Scholes pulling the strings in midfield, like nobody else can do in the Premier League, United beat QPR 2-0 to move 8 points ahead of City prior to their trip to Arsenal later today.

United dominated the game and went in the 15th minute when Ashley Young, who was offside, tumbled over after minimal contact from  QPR captain Shaun Derry. Derry was sent off and Rooney stepped up and scored his 30th goal of the season.

Maybe it is because Rooney is suspended for the first two games of the Euro’s this summer, but he seems to have scored 30 goals without the usual fanfare from the British press that have accompanied his goal scoring exploits in the past. And the lack of media attention I think is helping him just focus on playing football and United are benefiting for that this season.

United created chance after chance against 10 men, but could not find a way past QPR goalkeeper Paddy Kenny until Scholes lashed home a trademark drive from the edge of the penalty box in the 68th minute to wrap up all three points for United.

United never got out of second gear today, as QPR never threatened them, especially after they were reduced to 10-men, I thought that Valencia and Rafael Da Silva were terrific down the United right. That is where most of United’s attacks came from.

Ashley Young on the other side was nearly invisible, which was one reason Evra was so quiet. Did not get a chance to go forward much as United attacked down the right so often.

Another clean sheet and I cannot say enough about the job that Evans and De Gea have done this season. De Gea had nothing to do today, but Evans played well oce again. When Vidic got injured in December, everyone though that either United’s back four would be terrible, or that Smalling/Jones would step up and replace Vidic. But Evans has been one of United’s stars since January, and has hardly put a foot wrong the last three months.

What did your think of United’s win today?

I was not a big Evans fan early in the season but I’m happy to say he has proved me wrong! I think the same about Carrick- not outstanding but definitely competent to get the job done.
