David Moyes had looked on course to record back-to-back wins for the first time as United boss when the hosts edged ahead through Robin van Persie.
But Saints’ enterprise was rewarded in a penalty-box scramble when Lovren got his foot to the ball and prodded it goalwards, although skipper Lallana got the last touch from right in front of David de Gea.
It means United have won only three times from their eight league games so far, and the gap to pace-setters Arsenal has now widened to eight points.
Very mixed performance by United today in front of a very nervy Old Trafford crowd. Score one and Rooney and van Persie both hit the woodwork. If either of them had gone in, maybe it would have settled the team down and United would have won easily, but the team looks really short of confidence at the moment, as if they are not expecting to win.
Moyes started Carrick and Fellaini today as holding midfielders and once again it did not work as Fellaini was terrible. He has not settled at all at United and has looked off the pace in nearly every game he has played in.
I did not get the Moyes’s substitutions today. Nani was having an ok game on the right, yet Moyes replaced him and brought on Giggs, who was simply horrible. Welbeck then came on for Fellaini which meant that Giggs dropped back into a central midfield role alongside Carrick. Then he put Smalling on for Rooney and pushed Jones into midfield in an attempt to see the game out.
It did not work. These types of uninspiring moves might have worked at Everton, but big teams like Man United so do play for a 1-0 home win over Southampton. Moyes left on the bench Kagawa, Zaha and Hernández.
If his goal was to in essence replace Nani and Fellaini with a wide player and a central midfielder, wouldn’t Zaha and Kagawa been more inspiring moves? They would have kept the pressure on Southampton, instead of trying to nurse out a 1-0 win.
Yes its a little early to push the panic button but we if Everton and Spurs win tomorrow, we are at least five points behind any of the true Champions League contenders, with no sign that this team is ready to find any sort of form.
What do you think of United’s performance today?
