Sir Alex Ferguson has admitted that he took Patrice Evra out of the Manchester United line-up recently because his race-row with Luiz Suarez had left the Frenchman mentally shattered.
Ferguson felt his left-back looked jaded in both mind and body, and believes Evra’s mental strength had been sapped by the furore following his allegation that Suarez had racially abused him at Anfield last October.
“The intention was to give Patrice a clean break away from it all after the Suarez thing” SAF said. “He needed a rest physically because, don’t forget, he’s been playing almost non-stop for four years. But also mentally it’s been a difficult time for him and it was right to give him that break. He was tired both physically and mentally, but we’ve got him nice and fresh again for the run-in.”
