Sir Alex Ferguson says that Darren Fletcher is nowhere near being read to return to the United first team squad.
Fletch has not played for Manchester United since being diagnosed with a bowel condition in November and SAF is unsure whether he will ever be fully fit again.
“We’ll wait and see about that. Obviously the boy is trying very hard to get back to his level” said SAF.
“It’s not going to be easy but we’ll give him every possible chance and we’ll see how he does.”
Fletcher was given some coaching responsibilities towards the end of last season in order to try to keep him involved.
Fergie added: “Darren’s a terrific lad. We all hope he can come back.”
At this point I think United have to progress under the assumption that Fletcher is not coming back and plan accordingly. If he does make a return, which I hope he will, then United have an extra midfielder. But SAF cannot go into this season holding a squad place for Fletcher.
